Instructions

How to Descale a Tankless Water Heater

  1. This procedure is specifically for units that utilize isolation valves. If your unit does not have isolation valves please call Apex Engineering Products Corporation at 800.451.6291 for additional technical assistance. Always refer to the water heater manufacturer’s cleaning procedure if applicable.
  2. Turn off the unit, gas, and cold water supply to the tank heater.
  3. Open the bucket and remove the contents.
  4. Fill the circulation bucket with one gallon of water or about 1/3 full. Place underneath the water heater.
  5. Close both hot and cold isolation valves (C and D) adjacent to the tank heater.
  6. Make sure both service valves (A and B) are closed and remove both cold and hot water service valve caps. Be aware that residual water may drip out.
  7. Connect one of the supplied hoses to the cold water service valve (B). Be sure the fitting washers are installed before connecting, otherwise, leaks may occur.
  8. Connect the second of the supplied hoses to the hot water service valve (A). Be sure the fitting washers are installed before connection, otherwise, leaks may occur.
  9. Using the supplied clamp, secure the hot water service valve (A) hose to the circulation bucket in a manner that will reduce the risk of splashing/spilling.
  10. Connect the cold water service valve hose to the pump discharge outlet (threaded). Again, be sure the fitting washers are installed before connection. Slide the filter on to pump inlet (non-threaded) and place the pump in the bucket.
  11. Pour (1) 32oz bottle of RYDLYME into the bucket. The second included bottle is for use with your next scheduled cleaning.
  12. Open hot and cold service valves (A and B). Any existing water volume inside the tank will drain into the bucket.
  13. Make sure the pump is fully submerged (dry running will damage the pump). Plug the pump into an electrical outlet, and be sure that the outlet is grounded.
  14. Allow the pump to circulate the RYDLYME solution through the tank heater for 20-30 minutes. (Check for leaks and secure if necessary. If the water volume inside the bucket drops suddenly, then there may be a severe leak.) During this time, try our included FREE sample of RYDALL MP!
  15. Unplug the pump. Close the cold water service valve (B), disconnect the cold water hose, and reinstall the cold water service valve cap.
  16. Discard solution down drain, place bucket underneath heater, and re-secure hot water discharge hose.
  17. Open cold water supply and cold isolation valves (D).
  18. Flush the tank heater for 5 minutes or until the water is clear.
  19. Close the cold water supply and empty the bucket as needed.
  20. Close the hot water service valve (A), disconnect the hot water hose, and reinstall the hot water service valve cap. Open the hot water isolation valve (C).
  21. Turn on the gas. Return unit to service.
