Instructions

How to descale a tankless water heater

This procedure is specifically for units that utilize isolation valves. If your unit does not have isolation valves please call Apex Engineering Products Corporation at 800.451.6291 for additional technical assistance. Always refer to the water heater manufacturer’s cleaning procedure if applicable.

  1. Turn off unit, gas and cold water supply to tank heater.

  2. Open bucket and remove contents.

  3. Fill circulation bucket with one gallon of water or about 1/3 full.
    Place underneath water heater.

  4. Close both hot and cold isolation valves (C and D) adjacent
    to the tank heater.

  5. Make sure both service valves (A and B) are closed and
remove both cold and hot water service valve caps.
Be aware that residual water may drip out.

  6. Connect one of the supplied hoses to the cold water
service valve (B). Be sure the fitting washers are installed
before connecting, otherwise leaks may occur.

  7. Connect the second of the supplied hoses to the hot water
service valve (A). Be sure the fitting washers are installed
before connection, otherwise leaks may occur.

  8. Using the supplied clamp, secure the hot water service valve (A)
hose to the circulation bucket in a manner that will reduce
    the risk of splashing/spilling.

  9. Connect the cold water service valve hose to the pump discharge
outlet (threaded). Again, be sure the fitting washers are installed
before connection. Slide filter on to pump inlet (non-threaded)
and place pump in the bucket.

  10. Pour (1) 32oz bottle of RYDLYME into the bucket. The second
included bottle is for use with your next scheduled cleaning.

  11. Open hot and cold service valves (A and B). Any existing water
volume inside the tank will drain into bucket.

  12. Make sure the pump is fully submerged (dry running will damage
the pump). Plug pump into electrical outlet, be sure that the outlet
    is grounded.

  13. Allow pump to circulate the RYDLYME solution through the tank
heater for 20-30 minutes. (Check for leaks and secure if necessary.
If the water volume inside the bucket drops suddenly, then there
may be a severe leak.) During this time, try our included FREE sample of RYDALL MP!

  14. Unplug the pump. Close the cold water service valve (B), disconnect the cold water hose, reinstall cold water service valve cap.

  15. Discard solution down drain, place bucket underneath heater,
    re-secure hot water discharge hose.

  16. Open cold water supply and cold isolation valves (D).

  17. Flush tank heater for 5 minutes or until water is clear.
Close cold water supply and empty bucket as needed.

  18. Close the hot water service valve (A), disconnect the hot water hose, reinstall hot water service valve cap. Open hot water isolation valve (C).

  19. Turn on gas. Return unit to service.
